Expressing Cause and Effect

Learn to link a reason to its result — because, due to, so, and therefore — the connectors behind every good argument.

1

What are cause and effect?

The cause is the reason something happens; the effect is the result. Connecting the two clearly is one of the most useful writing skills you can have — especially for essays about real issues like the environment or education.

ما هما السبب والنتيجة؟
السبب هو الدافع وراء حدوث شيء ما؛ النتيجة هي الأثر المترتب عنه. الربط بينهما بوضوح من أهم مهارات الكتابة، خصوصًا في المقالات حول قضايا حقيقية مثل البيئة أو التعليم.

💡 Remember this
The cause always happens first, even if it’s written second in the sentence. Ask yourself: what happened first, and what happened because of it?

2

Introducing the cause

There are two groups of cause connectors, and they behave differently — this is exactly what the exam tests.

Followed by a full sentence

because
since
as
Followed by a noun / -ing

because of
due to
owing to

Example
They didn’t go on the trip because it was raining. (because + full sentence)
They didn’t go on the trip because of the rain. (because of + noun)

Exam tip
If a noun follows the gap, use because of / due to / owing to. If a full sentence (subject + verb) follows, use because / since / as.

3

Introducing the effect

These connectors introduce the result — what happened because of the cause.

Effect connectors
sothereforeas a resultconsequentlythushence

Example
Deforestation destroys natural habitats; as a result, many species lose their homes.
The factory released harmful chemicals into the river; consequently, local wildlife was affected.

💡 Good to know
So is informal and common in speech. Therefore, consequently, and thus are more formal — better for essays and reports.

4

Two sentence patterns

Cause-and-effect sentences follow one of two orders. Both are correct — choose whichever fits your sentence better.

1

Effect + cause connector + cause: Many species are endangered because of deforestation.
2
Cause + effect connector + effect: Deforestation is increasing; as a result, many species are endangered.

5

Environmental examples

Since this function often appears alongside environmental topics, practise with real examples from that theme.

Examples
Due to rising temperatures, ice caps are melting rapidly.
People are cutting down forests for farmland; consequently, biodiversity is decreasing.
Morocco invests in renewable energy because fossil fuels are limited and harmful to the environment.

6

Common mistakes to avoid

⚠️ Watch out
They stayed home because of it was raining. → ✅ They stayed home because it was raining. (because of needs a noun, not a full sentence)

The trip was cancelled because the heavy rain. → ✅ The trip was cancelled because of the heavy rain.

❌ Starting a sentence with an effect connector and forgetting the comma: Therefore we left early. → ✅ Therefore, we left early.
