How Much? How Many? — Quantifiers | Common Core Lesson

Learn how to use "much," "many," "some," "any," and more to talk about quantities in English! A simple, beginner grammar lesson for Common Core students, with Arabic help and a fun quiz.

Today, we learn small but important words: words that tell us “how much” or “how many” of something we have.

1

Countable or Not?

Some things we can count: one apple, two apples. Some things we cannot count: rice, water. This changes which words we use!

Countable
an apple, two apples
Uncountable
rice, water

بعض الأشياء يمكن عدّها: apple واحدة، apples اثنتان. وبعضها لا يمكن عدّه: rice، water. هذا يغير الكلمات التي نستخدمها معها.
2

Many & A Few (Countable)

For things we can count, we use these words:

For Countable Nouns
manya few

Example

How many books do you have?
I have a few apples.

للأشياء التي يمكن عدّها، نستخدم: many (كثير، في الأسئلة) و a few (قليل). مثال: “How many books do you have?”
3

Much & A Little (Uncountable)

For things we cannot count, we use these words instead:

For Uncountable Nouns
mucha little

Example

How much rice do you need?
There is a little sugar left.

💡 Easy Tip

“Many” and “much” both mean “a lot,” but “many” is for countable things and “much” is for uncountable things!

للأشياء التي لا يمكن عدّها، نستخدم: much (كثير، في الأسئلة) و a little (قليل). مثال: “How much rice do you need?”
4

Some & Any

We use “some” in positive sentences, and “any” in questions and negative sentences:

Example

I have some apples.
Do you have any eggs?
I don’t have any bread.

نستخدم “some” في الجمل المثبتة، و”any” في الأسئلة والجمل المنفية. مثال: “I have some apples.” لكن “Do you have any eggs?”
