Unit 10 of Outlook closes the Common Core year with New Inventions — a genuinely engaging final topic, paired with two of the syllabus’s more advanced structures: the passive voice and the present perfect. Unit 10 deliberately ends the year on two of its more demanding structures — the passive voice and the present perfect — giving students a genuine stretch before moving on to 1st Year Bac.
How to Use These in Class
Use the passive voice through real invention facts
Real sentences like “The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell” give the passive voice genuine purpose — students see immediately why English sometimes prefers this structure over the active voice.
Treat the present perfect as an introduction, not mastery
Since this is likely students’ first real exposure to the present perfect, keep expectations realistic — the goal here is familiarity, with deeper mastery expected to develop further in 1st Year Bac.
End the year with a genuine sense of progress
Since Lesson 7 reviews the final two units of the whole year, it’s worth briefly connecting it back to Unit 1 — a quick reminder of how far students have come from “Myself and Others” to describing inventions in the passive voice is a genuinely motivating way to close the year.
