Grammar taught through real consequences
Rather than generic hypotheticals, the first conditional in this unit is grounded in real environmental cause and effect — “If we don’t recycle, pollution will increase” — giving the grammar genuine purpose.
How to Use These in Class
Ground the first conditional in local examples
Ask students to complete first-conditional sentences about a real environmental issue in their own city or region — it makes the grammar concrete rather than abstract from the start.
Let permission language lead into the writing task
Since the awareness article often calls for suggestions (“People should not…”), a quick review of the permission modals from Lesson 2 gives students useful language to draw on before writing.
Keep the environmental writing task genuinely local
Encouraging students to write about a specific, real environmental issue they’ve noticed nearby — rather than a generic global topic — tends to produce noticeably more engaged, specific writing.
