Past continuous and 'used to' work as a pair
Both structures describe the past, but for different purposes — a specific moment in progress versus a repeated habit — making this unit a natural place to teach the contrast directly.
How to Use These in Class
Contrast the past continuous with “used to” directly
Put one example of each side by side (“I was saving money for a bike” vs. “I used to save all my pocket money”) — the direct contrast makes the difference in meaning clearer than separate explanations.
Make the pocket money survey genuinely real
Having students collect real answers from classmates before writing Lesson 6’s text produces far more authentic writing than an invented scenario.
The spending habits chart works well as real data
For Lesson 7’s mini-project, using students’ own real (or estimated) spending habits, rather than invented numbers, makes the chart-reading and vocabulary practice feel genuinely relevant.
