The full rule, with examples. This is your reference before the exam.

A vs An — it's about the sound, not the letter

Use A before a word that starts with a consonant SOUND.
Use AN before a word that starts with a vowel SOUND (a, e, i, o, u sound).

“a student” — starts with a consonant sound
“an exam” — starts with a vowel sound
“an hour” — the “h” is silent, so it sounds like a vowel
“a university” — “university” starts with a “y” sound, not a vowel sound, so we use “a”

When to use A / AN (indefinite articles)

Use A/AN when you talk about something for the first time, or something general, not a specific one.

“I saw a dog in the street.” (any dog, not a specific one)
“She is a teacher.” (talking about her job in general)

When to use THE (definite article)

Use THE when you talk about something specific — something already known, already mentioned, or unique.

“The dog in the street was barking.” (a specific dog we already know about)
“I saw a dog. The dog was brown.” (first mention = a, second mention = the)
“The sun is very hot today.” (there is only one sun — it’s unique)

When to use NO article at all

Don’t use an article with general plural nouns, or general uncountable nouns.

“Students need good teachers.” (students in general, no article)
“I like coffee.” (coffee in general)
Also, don’t use an article before most country names, most cities, or people’s names.
“Morocco is a beautiful country.” (not “The Morocco”)
