How to write clearly about past habits, and how to organize your ideas. This is your reference before the exam.
Writing about past habits
When you write about something you used to do, use “used to” or the Simple Past, and always add a time expression to show when.
“When I was young, I used to spend my summers at my grandparents’ house.”
“As a child, I played outside every day after school.”
Try to also add a small detail or feeling, not just the fact.
“I used to be scared of the dark, so I always slept with the light on.” (this is more interesting than just “I was scared of the dark”)
Organizing your ideas — the basic structure
A good paragraph always follows a clear order. Don’t just write ideas randomly — organize them like this:
1. Topic sentence — introduces what the paragraph is about
2. Supporting ideas — two or three details that develop the topic
3. Linking words — connect your ideas smoothly
4. Conclusion — a short closing sentence
