Why checking your writing matters
Even good ideas lose marks if the English has mistakes. Before you finish any piece of writing — a letter, a paragraph, an email — always read it again slowly and check for these common problem areas.
1. Verb tense mistakes
Make sure your tense matches the time you’re talking about.
❌ “Yesterday, I go to the airport.”
✅ “Yesterday, I went to the airport.”
2. Subject-verb agreement
The verb must match the subject — singular with singular, plural with plural.
❌ “The tourists visits the medina every day.”
✅ “The tourists visit the medina every day.”
3. Articles (a, an, the)
Check if you need “a”, “an”, “the”, or no article at all.
❌ “We stayed at hotel near the beach.”
✅ “We stayed at a hotel near the beach.”
4. Prepositions
Small words like “in”, “on”, “at” are easy to mix up — always double-check them.
❌ “Our flight leaves in Monday.”
✅ “Our flight leaves on Monday.”
5. Spelling and capitalization
Check spelling carefully, and remember capital letters for “I”, names of places, and the first word of every sentence.
❌ “we visited morocco last summer.”
✅ “We visited Morocco last summer.”
