What is a phrasal verb?

A phrasal verb is a verb combined with a small word like “up”, “down”, “out”, or “on” — together they create a new meaning, often very different from the original verb alone.

“give up” does not mean “give” — it means to stop trying.
“carry on” does not mean “carry” — it means to continue.

A common mistake

Don’t try to guess the meaning from the verb alone — phrasal verbs must be learned as a whole expression, like a single vocabulary word.

❌ Thinking “look up to someone” is about looking upward.
