A, An, or The? — Articles | Common Core Lesson

Learn when to use "a," "an," and "the" in English! A simple, beginner grammar lesson for Common Core students, with Arabic help and a fun quiz.

Today, we learn three very small but very important words: “a,” “an,” and “the.” They come before nouns, and choosing the right one makes a big difference!

1

A or An?

We use “a” or “an” when we talk about one thing in general, not something specific:

The Rule
“a” before a consonant sound. “an” before a vowel sound.

Example

a school, a friend, a book
an apple, an orange, an hour

نستخدم “a” أو “an” عندما نتحدث عن شيء واحد بشكل عام، وليس شيئا محددا. “a” قبل صوت ساكن، و”an” قبل صوت متحرك.
2

The

We use “the” when we talk about one specific thing that we already know about:

Example

The teacher is nice.
The school is big.

💡 Easy Tip

Ask yourself: does the listener already know exactly which one I mean? If yes, use “the”!

نستخدم “the” عندما نتحدث عن شيء محدد نعرفه بالفعل. مثال: “The teacher is nice” (المعلم لطيف — معلم محدد نعرفه).

Seeing the Difference

Let’s compare “a” and “the” with the same word:

A (any one)
I have a dog.
The (a specific one)
The dog is sleeping.

The first time we mention something, we usually use “a/an.” After that, we use “the” because now everyone knows which one we mean!

أول مرة نذكر فيها شيئا، نستخدم عادة “a/an”. بعد ذلك، نستخدم “the” لأن الجميع يعرف الآن أي واحد نقصد.
