Must, Mustn’t, or Don’t Have To? — Modals of Obligation | Common Core Lesson

In the last lesson, you learned “should” for advice. Today, we learn three stronger words: “must,” “mustn’t,” and “don’t have to” — they look similar but mean very different things!

1

Must (Strong Obligation)

We use “must” when something is really necessary:

Example

You must see a doctor.
I must take my medicine every day.

نستخدم “must” عندما يكون شيء ما ضروريا حقا، مثل: “You must see a doctor” (يجب أن ترى طبيبا).
2

Mustn't (Forbidden)

We use “mustn’t” when something is not allowed at all:

Example

You mustn’t smoke here.
You mustn’t skip your medicine.

نستخدم “mustn’t” عندما يكون شيء ما ممنوعا تماما، مثل: “You mustn’t smoke here” (يمنع التدخين هنا).
3

Don't Have To (Not Necessary)

We use “don’t have to” when something is simply not required — it’s your choice:

Example

You don’t have to see a doctor for a small cold.
You don’t have to take this medicine every day.

نستخدم “don’t have to” عندما يكون شيء ما غير ضروري، أي أنه اختياري، مثل: “You don’t have to see a doctor for a small cold.”
4

The Important Difference

“Mustn’t” and “don’t have to” look similar, but they mean very different things. Compare:

Mustn't
forbidden
Don't Have To
not necessary, your choice

💡 Easy Tip

“You mustn’t eat sugar” means it’s forbidden. “You don’t have to eat sugar” means it’s simply your choice. Don’t mix them up!

“mustn’t” و”don’t have to” تبدوان متشابهتين، لكنهما مختلفتان تماما: “mustn’t” تعني ممنوع، بينما “don’t have to” تعني غير ضروري (اختياري).
