I Am, You Are, She Is! — The Verb “To Be” & Present Simple | Common Core Lesson

Learn the verb "to be" (am, is, are) and simple present sentences in English! A simple, beginner grammar lesson for Common Core students, with Arabic help and a fun quiz.

In the last lesson, you said “I’m Sara” or “I’m Youssef.” Today, we learn the small but very important word behind that: the verb “to be.” It changes depending on who you are talking about!

1

Am, Is, Are

The verb “to be” has three forms in the present: am, is, and are. Look at who uses each one:

I
am
You / We / They
are

Don't Forget
He, She, It → is

فعل “to be” له 3 أشكال: “am” مع I، و”are” مع you/we/they، و”is” مع he/she/it.
2

Making Sentences

Now let’s use “to be” in real sentences:

Example

I am 14 years old.
You are my friend.
She is from Fez.
We are in the classroom.

💡 Easy Tip

We often make short forms: “I am” becomes “I’m,” and “She is” becomes “She’s.” Both are correct — short forms are just faster to say!

نستخدم “to be” لنكوّن جملا مثل “I am 14 years old” (عمري 14 سنة). يمكننا اختصار الجملة: “I am” تصبح “I’m”.
3

Making Questions and Saying No

To ask a question, we move “am/is/are” to the front of the sentence:

Example

Are you a student? Yes, I am.
Is she from Morocco? Yes, she is.

To say “no,” we add “not” after am/is/are:

Key Phrase
I am not tired. = She is not (isn’t) here.

لنطرح سؤالا، ننقل am/is/are إلى بداية الجملة. ولنقول “لا”، نضيف “not” بعد am/is/are.
4

A First Look at Present Simple

We also use another form of the present to talk about things that are true or happen often. This is called the Present Simple:

Example

I live in Morocco.
She speaks English and Arabic.
We study at school every day.

Notice: with he/she/it, we add “-s” to the verb (speak → speaks). Don’t worry — we will practice this much more in the next unit!

الحاضر البسيط (Present Simple) نستخدمه لأشياء حقيقية أو متكررة. مع he/she/it نضيف “s” للفعل.
