The Vocabulary of Cultural Values

Learn the words behind culture, tradition, and diversity — and why no culture exists in isolation.

1

What is culture?

Culture is the way of life of a particular group of people — their beliefs, customs, traditions, and values, passed down from one generation to the next. No culture exists completely alone: ideas, food, and traditions constantly move between cultures, which is why multiculturalism — the mixing of cultures — is such an important idea in this unit.

💡 Good to know
A stereotype is a belief about a group of people based on the idea that everyone in that group behaves the same way — it’s usually oversimplified and often unfair. Culture shock is the confusion someone feels when they first experience an unfamiliar culture.
