How to Use These in Class
Teach phrasal verbs in short, repeated doses
Phrasal verbs rarely stick from a single lesson. Revisiting 3-4 of the unit’s phrasal verbs briefly in the following lessons — even just a quick recall warm-up — reinforces them far more effectively than covering them once and moving on.
Link complaining and apologizing directly to the personal letter
A personal letter is a natural place to practice both functions — complaining about a problem or apologizing for something — so teaching the Functions lesson shortly before the Writing lesson lets students draw on language they’ve just practiced.
Use the reading to introduce real cultural comparisons
Beyond comprehension questions, ask students to compare one value from the reading to their own cultural context — a quick discussion that deepens engagement with the topic before writing.
Personal letters need a different register than formal writing
If students have already practiced formal letter writing in another unit, spend a few minutes explicitly contrasting the tone and structure — personal letters are warmer and less rigid, and students often default to formal habits out of exam anxiety.
