What is this lesson about?

Every day we share our opinions and react to the opinions of others. This lesson gives you the useful expressions to do this in English — how to ask for someone’s opinion, how to give your own, and how to agree or disagree politely. These functions appear often in your Baccalaureate exam.

Asking for someone's opinion

When you want to know what another person thinks, start with one of these questions.

Ask for an opinion

What do you think of …?What’s your opinion about …?How do you feel about …?What’s your point of view on …?Do you believe that …?

Giving your opinion

To share what you think, begin your sentence with one of these openers, then say your idea.

Give your opinion

In my opinion …I think that …I believe that …As far as I’m concerned …PersonallyI feel that …To be honest …It seems to me that …

Example

In my opinion, young people should follow their passion.
As far as I’m concerned, reading is the best way to learn.

💡 Study smart

Pick just two openers you like and use them every time. It is better to use two expressions confidently than to forget ten.

Agreeing and disagreeing

Once you hear an opinion, you can react. Here are the two sides — how to agree, and how to disagree.

Agreeing 👍

I totally agree.
You’re absolutely right.
That’s exactly how I feel.
I couldn’t agree more.
That’s a good point.

Disagreeing 👎

I’m afraid I disagree.
I don’t think so.
I see your point, but …
I’m not sure about that.
I can’t agree with that.

💡 Be polite

In English, disagreeing softly sounds more respectful. Starting with “I’m afraid I disagree” or “I see your point, but …” is much kinder than a flat “No, you’re wrong.”

Agreeing partially

Sometimes you agree a little, but not completely. These “middle” expressions are very useful and impress examiners.

Agree partially

I agree to some extentbut …You have a pointhowever …That may be truebut …I see what you meanyet …

Here is a short dialogue showing all four functions working together.

The conversation

Sara: What do you think of online learning?
Karim: In my opinion, it saves a lot of time.
Sara: That’s a good point, but I miss real classrooms.
Karim: I see what you mean. Still, I couldn’t study without it.

What's happening

Sara asks for an opinion.
Karim gives his opinion.
Sara agrees partially, then adds a “but”.
Karim agrees partially too, then keeps his view.

Common mistakes to avoid

⚠️ Watch out

❌ I am agree with you. → ✅ I agree with you. (“Agree” is already a verb — never say “am agree”.)

❌ According to me … → ✅ In my opinion … / Personally, I think … (“According to” is used for other people, not yourself.)

❌ I disagree with that idea because is wrong. → ✅ … because it is wrong.
