Mr., Mrs., and More! — Titles, Plurals & Greetings | Common Core Lesson

Learn titles (Mr., Mrs., Ms.), how to make words plural, and more ways to greet people in English! A simple, beginner lesson for Common Core students, with Arabic help and a fun quiz.

You already know how to say hello and tell someone your name. Now let’s learn a few more useful things: how to politely say someone’s title, how to talk about more than one thing, and a few more ways to greet people!

1

Titles: Mr., Mrs., Miss, Ms.

In English, we often use a title before someone’s family name, to show respect.

Common Titles
Mr.Mrs.MissMs.

Example

Mr. Amrani is my teacher.
Mrs. Bennani is a doctor.

💡 Easy Tip

“Mr.” is for a man. “Mrs.” is for a married woman. “Miss” is for a young or unmarried woman. “Ms.” is a polite title for any woman, married or not!

نستخدم الألقاب Mr. وMrs. وMiss وMs. قبل اسم العائلة لإظهار الاحترام. “Mr.” للرجل، و”Mrs.” للمرأة المتزوجة، و”Miss” للفتاة، و”Ms.” لقب مهذب لأي امرأة.

One or Many? (Plurals)

When we talk about more than one thing, we usually add “-s” to the word:

One
book
More than One
books

But some words are different. They don’t follow the “-s” rule:

Remember These
child → children, man → men, woman → women

لنتحدث عن أكثر من شيء، نضيف عادة “s” في نهاية الكلمة، مثل book → books. لكن بعض الكلمات مختلفة ولا تتبع هذه القاعدة، مثل child → children.

More Ways to Greet

You already know “Hello” and “Hi.” Here is another very common greeting exchange:

Example

A: Hi! How are you?
B: I’m fine, thank you! And you?
A: I’m good, thanks!

This short exchange is one of the most useful conversations in English. You will hear it every day!

“How are you?” سؤال شائع جدا يعني “كيف حالك؟”. نجيب عادة بـ “I’m fine, thank you!” (أنا بخير، شكرا) أو “I’m good, thanks!”.
