The Vocabulary of Education

Learn the words to talk about school, learning, and qualifications — the vocabulary the exam uses most.

1

What is this lesson about?

Education is one of the most common Bac exam topics. This lesson gives you the vocabulary to talk about the types of education, the school system, and the qualifications people earn.

عن ماذا يتحدث هذا الدرس؟
التعليم من أكثر مواضيع امتحان الباكالوريا شيوعًا. في هذا الدرس ستتعلّم مفردات أنواع التعليم، والنظام المدرسي، والشهادات التي يحصل عليها الناس.

2

Types of education

Education doesn’t only happen in a classroom. Learn to name the different types.

Type

formal education
non-formal education
vocational education
special education
e-learning
What it means

structured learning in schools, leading to a certificate
learning outside school, not always certified (evening classes, self-study)
training for a practical skill or trade
teaching designed for students with particular needs
learning through the internet or digital tools

💡 Good to know
Formal education always ends with an official certificate or degree. Non-formal education doesn’t — you learn on your own initiative, through experience or independent study.

3

The Moroccan school system

Know the levels and the key facts — these often appear in reading passages.

Levels of school
primary schoolmiddle schoolhigh schooluniversity

Useful facts
Schooling in Morocco is compulsory up to a certain age, which means students must attend school. Some schools are overcrowded, with too many students in one class.

4

Word families — the exam favourite

The exam often gives one form of a word and asks for another. Learn the verb, noun, and adjective together.

Verb

to educateParents educate their children.
to graduateShe graduated last year.
to enrolHe enrolled at university.
to fail / to passHe failed the exam.
Noun / Adjective

education (noun) / educated (adjective)
graduate (noun) / graduation (noun)
enrolment (noun)
literateilliterate (adjectives)

Exam tip
When you see “He wants to become (educate)”, change the verb to the adjective: educated. Always ask: does the sentence need a verb, a noun, or an adjective?

5

School life vocabulary

These words describe everyday school life and often appear in writing tasks.

School life
a uniformfeesan assignmenta lectureto take notesto reviseto reviewmarks/gradesa degreea certificatea diploma

In a sentence
Students must wear a uniform and pay fees every term. Before the exam, I always revise my notes and take notes carefully in class.

6

Useful collocations

Collocations are words that naturally go together — using them makes your writing sound fluent.

Learn these phrases
a boarding schoolliteracy classesmultimedia learningcritical thinkingactive learningto drop out of schoolto keep up with

Example
My cousin studies at a boarding school far from home. Many students drop out of school because of financial problems, so literacy classes help adults who never finished their education.

7

Common mistakes to avoid

⚠️ Watch out
He is educate. → ✅ He is educated. (use the adjective)

She wants to learn me English. → ✅ She wants to teach me English. (“learn” is what YOU do; “teach” is what someone does FOR you)

He passed the exam when you mean he failed — check the meaning carefully, they are opposites!
