The Vocabulary of International Organizations

Learn the acronyms and purposes of the world's major organizations — the exam's favourite matching exercise.

1

What is an international organization?

An international organization has members, activities, or influence across many countries. There are two main types: governmental organizations (formed by countries’ governments, like the UN) and non-governmental organizations, or NGOs (independent groups, like Amnesty International).

❌ Mixing up similar acronyms: WHO (World Health Organization) is not the same as WTO (World Trade Organization) — read carefully.

UNICEF help children. → ✅ UNICEF helps children. (subject-verb agreement)

❌ Forgetting that NGOs are independent of government — don’t confuse them with governmental organizations like the UN.
