How to Use These in Class
Pair the two Functions lessons deliberately
Expressing requests and expressing lack of understanding work naturally together — students often need to ask for clarification right after making or hearing a request. Teaching them close together reinforces both in realistic exchanges.
Use the reading to introduce vocabulary in context
Covering the Vocabulary lesson just before the Reading lesson means students meet the unit’s key words once directly, then again inside a real text — reinforcing them without extra repetition drills.
Let the funny story draw on everything else in the unit
Encourage students to include at least one modal verb and one request or clarification exchange in their funny story — a natural way to pull the whole unit together in the final writing task.
Humour lowers the stakes for weaker writers
Because the writing task is playful rather than formal, it’s often a good unit for hesitant writers to take more risks with language — worth pointing out explicitly to students who tend to hold back in more formal writing tasks.
